Stuffy Noses
Something I just plain don't understand about getting a stuffy nose...when I'm sitting down I can't breathe but the minute I stand up...it's clear again! Why is that?? I mean I understand when I lay down why I have trouble breathing because all that snot clogs backwards into my airway but why when I'm sitting versus standing?
Okay so a little background on "Nasal Congestion"
Wikipedia says (gotta love Wikipedia by the way!) it is caused by membranes lining the nose becoming swollen from inflamed blood vessels. I'm just curious why in the world this causes an over abundance of snot though! Okay so the reason we have mucus in the first place is because it serves to protect epithelial cells in the respiratory system (as well as others). However, increased mucus production in the respiratory tract is a symptom of many common illnesses, such as the common cold and the flu. I still don't understand why though? Is it that the viral germs cause your mucus glands to go into hyperdrive? Do your glands go into said hyperdrive because the mucus is trying to force the germs out of your body? WHY!
Since I couldn't find an exact answer on Wikipedia I googled it and found this on Yahoo answers:
Mucus, saliva and bodily fluid along those lines are produced to help remove things from your body and protect healthy cells. So when you are sick your body increases production in order to rid your body of the disease and prevent other cells from getting sick. WOOHOO! Well now that I've gotten that explanation, I need to know why when I sit down it's impossible to breathe and when I stand up it's all clear. UGH. Stupid getting sick with stupid stuffy noses.
