Deep Breath, and...

Oh my. You may know how much I love the fall season and I've listed why I love it so much, well I think I love it even more this year than last... Last year I didn't see this but this year I'm on top of things! The State Fair's Deep Fried Blog is offering up free trips to the fair...FREE...if you win their blogging contest to become the Deep Fried Ambassador. OOOH YAY! I just have to explain why I love the State Fair and why the heck I'd be a great Deep Fried Ambassador. Here goes:

As a child my parents would take us to the fair as many years as they could afford the entrance fees. We rode a few rides but our focus was usually on The Village of Yesteryear, the Livestock Exhibits, and the Agriculture Displays...oh yeah and the art and free stuff ;-) so of course I grew up with a healthy love of the cultural aspect of the State Fair. In high school I started going with my friends to the Fair and enjoying the games, still not so much the rides but the Ferris Wheel, and again the cultural stuff but we went mostly for the games and prizes. In College I went away to the NC Mountains for school and missed out on going to the fair for years. When I finally moved back to Raleigh my friend Sara's birthday always fell on the week of the Fair so we started a tradition of going to the Fair every year together. It wasn't until these trips to the fair that I began experiencing some of the more adult rides and BOY was that exciting! But still the only ride you would catch me on that left the ground was the Ferris Wheel. Then last year the guy I was dating insisted that I ride at least one ride with him...and he picked the swings, GULP! Up we went and around and around and I just couldn't stop thinking "OH GOD OH GOD! I don't want this thing to break loose and go flying across the fair grounds with me in it!" But I made it, and it was actually quite fun, so this year I am planning to stock up on some Dramamine and ride some more of the crazy rides!

So now that you know a little bit of my history with the fair let me tell you why I LOOVE it and am so passionate about it. Every fall the minute I step outside and breathe in that first breath of the crisp autumn air, I get that little giddy feeling because I know the fair is coming soon! I love the cultural aspect of the fair, getting to go to the Village of Yesteryear and see the people in period costumes selling their wares and doing demonstrations, it is incredible and such a great learning experience for young and old alike. The agricultural displays are just as amazing, it's great to see how they honor the people that work so hard to provide our state with locally grown produce and livestock. I love how children are given the opportunity to milk a cow and see a piglet up close. The pig races!!! Oh my gosh, those are one of the best things to sit and watch, if you can find a seat. The rides are incredible! Death defying, lazy spinning, intense upside down, and all around! And oh, the food!

The FOOD! The number one reason I love the fair is getting to experience the flavors of so many different cultures and styles and all that deep fried goodness. Every year I make a small list of the new food items that can be found around the fair and I try to taste at least 3 things off my list. I've had Lamb Gyro's, Fried Cheese (mmmmmmm!), Funnel Cake, Deep Fried Oreos, Deep Fried Candy Bars, Candy Apples, Honey Cotton Candy, Sausage and Sour Kraut, Hot Dogs, Pizza, and so many more! I didn't get to try that Chocolate Covered Bacon last year because I couldn't find it and you just don't know the level of disappointment that was experienced by that loss....This year I WILL have some. I couldn't be more excited for the fabulous menu options, this year I think I'm going to go for one of those Giant Turkey Legs finally! :-D

Why in the world would I be a GREAT Deep Fried Ambassador? Because even if I don't get the official title, you know you're going to hear all about everything I got to experience at the fair ;-) But seriously, I love the fair, the excitement started building back in July! There's so many things I've yet to experience at the fair even though every time I go I stay the entire day, from early AM till the moon is shining overhead. I would love the opportunity to experience all the new and exciting parts of the fair as well as the old tried and true aspects of it, and I would LOVE to get to share the excitement with everyone as a blogger! Never have I ever won anything but who knows, maybe this year I'll get lucky and win the one thing that could make this the best Fair EVER!
