My Class
I can't BELIEVE that I haven't posted an update on my first day of class! Okay so here goes:
My class is called "Start Your Own Wedding Consultant Business" and the lady that teaches it was in the business for a looooong time, she used to plan destination weddings in Bermuda. So, as you can tell, she comes with a wealth of knowledge in this field. The class itself is more focused on the in's and out's of starting our own company so it's more about choosing a good name for your business, bank accounts, websites, etc. I'm cool with that actually because if I ever do decide to start my own business I'll already have the "how to" guide for where to get started :-)
We spent most of our first class going around the room introducing ourselves and talking about why we wanted to be in this particular business. I'm so glad I wasn't the only one taking the class because they don't offer a how to become an event planner class. There was at least two other ladies that wanted to have a more broad offering of Events rather than just weddings. I think that's great! There were so many different reasons why people were taking the class and why they wanted to become a wedding planner, most people had planned their own wedding and are now stay at home mom's that want to start planning other people's weddings. I think I'm the only person in the room who's not married and doesn't have a child. I think that's going to help me though... let me explain.
One thing Barbara mentioned was that this business can take over your life. Not in a bad way but that you will find yourself getting so caught up in planning that you lose track of what time of day it is. I think that is fantastic and I've been there before with planning an event. The thing is, people with families and children can't really afford to become lost in their career, that's where I feel like I'm going to benefit. I'm not married, have no prospects, and am even less likely to have a child... so there ya go. In all my "selfish" singleness I would have plenty of time to focus most of my efforts on creating a spectacular event for someone! Okay maybe that's a really horrible way of looking at it but hey, I still like the advantage there ;-) lol.
We got a homework assignment as well, look up the competition. Nice. She basically wants us to know what else is out there in the field we're interested in. I've found quite a few event planners websites that are in Raleigh and then some in other areas...there are some great web pages and some really crappy ones and I've also come across so many blogs! Blogs are great! I love that I can read about the events they've put on and how they did it from start to finish. Lovely! And the pictures are fantastic! My next step is to come up with a name. Oh dear. I'm horrible at that! So, I'm now working on coming up with a spectacular name for an Event Planning company, one that isn't currently in use somewhere else. That's the hardest part! Oh dear...and I wont be using my name...I find that terribly simple, I'd rather have something catchy that really stands out that just Ariel's Events. Anyway, I'm super excited about this class and I can't WAIT till the next class!
