Mirror Self Portrait

Okay, so while this cartoon isn't quite true (it's not only girls) it's a little funny and a lot sad. Where in the world did this trend begin? Why do people feel the need to continuously take pictures of themselves in mirrors and post them on the internet? I just can't comprehend the reasoning behind the mirror self portrait. I have this friend, we'll call him Guy Smiley.
Guy Smiley here only updates his facebook picture once in a while but it always seems to be a picture of him taken by himself in a bathroom mirror. Please note exhibits A and B below.

Exhibit A...................Exhibit B
I "borrowed" these pictures from my friend Guy Smiley's facebook and I think I sufficiently blurred his face and the belt bucle that seems to be his trademark. Anyhow, if you couldn't tell by the tile and the bathroom stalls in the pictures that he was in a bathroom you can at least tell that he's taken his self portrait in a mirror because you can see the cell phone in his hand. I've always thought if I were to take a picture of myself in a mirror I would do it in a way so that I could crop out the camera and the flash and no one would be the wiser. Apparently no one else seems to think of this. I asked Guy Smiley yesterday why his preferred method of picture taking was bathroom mirrors and his response was something about it being the only way to get pictures of himself. *sigh* What ever happened to having hang outs with friends and getting candid pictures of yourself taken with your friends or while doing something stupid? I guess that went the way of the Dodo.
As for where this trend started...

I'm sure Mr. Myspace himself might be the answer to this question. It is highly possible that people started taking these ridiculous pictures before there was a Myspace but once people became friends with Tom (because well, who wouldn't want to be Tom's friend...he's pretty good to look at if nothing else), saw these pictures he takes of himself, and then decided HEY I want to be cool like the creator of one of the worlds largest social networking sites! And thus the plauge of stupid pictues began.
Personally, if there's no one to take my picture for me, I prefer one of the following two methods of self portraiting...

A) Ahh, the good 'ol arm extended self portrait, note the raised shoulder and how you can see most of the arm where the camera is being held.

B)And then there's my personal favorite, the self timer on your camera. Many camera's have a self timer but the problem becomes finding a level place high enough to take your own picture on. If this method fails, revert to method A.

I agree with you totally! Do these people not have friends that will take their pictures? It's even more incredibly stupid when people take them of themselves in swimsuits/underwear. Every one of those captions should read, "I took this myself b/c I'm the only one that thinks I'm sexy enough to have a scantily clad picture taken of myself"

Hilarious and totally agree. I mean, come one -- and if it were me, I'd at least clean my mirror before doing it. Most people that do this have splashes of water/toothpaste or whatever else just hanging out in the picture with them. Gross and stupid.

P.S. Sometimes I think you and Kelley should have an radio talk show. It'd be really fun.

I KNOW Guy Smiley - and it's pretty hilariously true.

I also agree with the radio show thing you and Kelley need to have. hehehe!
