Handicapped Squirrel
I have witnessed my fair share of flattened rodents in the road and may have seen a few become said road kill. I have not, however, seen one become handicapped...until yesterday. I was on my way home from work and behind this ridiculously cautious driver when all of a sudden I see something shoot out from under her car and take off across the road. It took me a second to realize what I was seeing. She had run over a squirrel but not flattened him! The poor thing was truckin it across the street using only his front legs and dragging his broken back legs behind him the whole way! As I'm watching this I noticed a woman walking her dog stop and stare in horror and this poor squirrel made it to her side of the street. I don't know what happened, if the woman tried to catch it or if she just let him go but I can't imagine the squirrel made it to this morning still alive. It's insanely strange to me
the number of animals that get hit by cars every day... some people even aim their cars at the poor woodland creatures. We have signs for deer, antelope, bear, moose and duck crossings, so why in the world do we not have squirrel crossing signs? Especially in highly concentrated areas of squirrel (like downtown for instance). I am by no means one of those loony animal rights people but it was just one of those seriously disturbing moments for me to watch a squirrel have its hind legs squashed by a ginormous car.
