Why Can't We All Just Get Along?
Because I don't like you, that's why.
This has been in my que for a bit because I've had a really hard time trying to not come across like a complete ass.
Sounds mean right? I swear I'm not a mean hearted person, I really do love some people but I gotta be honest, if you piss me off right out of the gate the chances of me being nice to you are nil. I'm not really a morning person and the fact that I have to get up and go be in a place where I have no desire to be . every. single. day. makes me even less of a morning person. I just want to walk in, sit down, and be left alone. If I have a desire to talk to you, guess what? I'll speak to you, otherwise please just go away, really.
In a world where you're criticized, called two-faced, and a hypocrite for being nice to someone's face when you don't really like them, I prefer to just be up front with people. The problem is, in the workplace you can't really be outright mean to people because you have to work with them every. single. day. So, I try to be as polite as possible when I have to and keep mostly to myself otherwise. There are only about two people that don't annoy the snot out of me on a daily basis and I will go and chat with them regularly but for everyone else I reserve a hello and the occasional "I'm fine thanks." I don't think it's fair to ask how people are if I don't really care about their answer, I know I hate it when someone asks me how I am and when I go to tell them they get this glazed look. I understand it's a polite formality we've become accustomed to but honestly, if you don't really care that my head hurts and my pants are too tight then don't ask how I'm doing...save yourself some time.
I know, I sound like Oscar the Grouch, but this is the person I've become over the years, cynical and jaded. When I get in and sit down at my desk, I prefer to take a few minutes and wake up, alone. There's a lady that insists on saying good morning. One day she must have said goodmorning several times without a response (I usually put in earphones and turn up the music to drown out the lady on the other side of the cubicle wall...she's LOUD) and so this lady hoisted herself up over the top of my cubicle wall snapped her fingers at me and said, "I said goodmorning". WOW. If I did not respond the first several times, I must have not heard you or cared, either way... to go out of your way to get my attention just for that...honestly.
Do we really have to like everyone? Heck no. Of course it's always good to be as polite as possible to the people you work with for the simple fact that, well, you have to see them every day and nothing's more uncomfortable than a tense work place. So while I really can't stand most people I try really hard to be polite but I'm gonna let you know, sometimes I fail miserably. :-/
