Not the Athletic Type

I must have inherited my mother's awful coordination because my dad used to play football and baseball as a teenager, so I know I didn't get my inability to play sports from him. All through Middle School and High School when we had to dress out for gym and run around chasing balls for an hour, I had the most difficult time and gained a great deal of hatred for sports. In the 8th grade I started taking Highland Dance and was actually pretty decent at it. If you've ever seen a Highland dancer perform you'd know it's very much like a sport. In High School I learned how to surf but never did that well. So most of my sporting experience, as you can tell, is very limited and does not involve any kind of ball.

This past Saturday I joined 4 other members of the Raleigh University Ward to play a game of Softball against Durham 3rd's singles Ward. My original intent was not to play until we arrived and realized we were it... we had to borrow about 6 of their players so we could have a full team. So I sucked it up and gave it a try, it was actually a lot of fun and since we didn't play by the strictest of rules I really did enjoy myself.

I did manage to hit the ball a few times and made it to first base and second base twice and once I actually made it all the way around to the third base! I was so proud of myself...because not only do I throw and hit like a girl but dang it I RUN like a girl. We ended up winning the game by about 2 points I believe but I honestly think it was only because we had the help of their team members.

Why were we even playing this game against Durham in the first place? Well, funny you should ask. Derrek, a member of the Activities Committee in Durham, requested that we start an inter-stake tournament, complete with trophy and a banquet at the end. It sounded like a lot of fun so we agreed. Not only are we getting to improve our relationship with the Durham Singles but we get the chance to have a trophy each year. It's really an exciting prospect and it's a wonder no one came up with the idea sooner. Anyway, our next sport is Volleyball then soccer and finally we'll wrap up the season with a little touch football. I'm actually really looking forward to all the other events because I had so much fun with the first one...even though there is no way on earth or in hell that anyone could ever get me to try and play soccer (my hand eye coordination is bad enough but trying to kick a ball while running...psh!). So here's looking forward to new friendships and fun experiences even if I do suck at sports!

Hahahahahha. The look on your face in that picture is priceless! The intense concentration, the guilelessness of it is adorable. :-P
