The Dine N Dash
I watched two shows this week where they instituted the dine-n-dash. What is so great about leaving without paying for your meal? And do people really get away with this?
The first was the most recent episode of One Tree Hill where Lucas finds a "Cure" ticket in Peyton's wrecked car and he has a flashback. They're in a diner and he tells her they're going to leave without paying but as she runs from the restaurant he hands the waitress money saying there's $5 extra if she runs after them screaming. The second was the most recent episode of Bones. Throughout the episode Booth keeps saying how you're never really good unless you've done something bad. At the end Brennan says she's never done anything bad and he tells her that they're going to dine-n-dash. She gets up and squeals her way out of the restaurant and Booth leaves some dinero on the counter.
So really, in both examples neither couple actually flees the restaurant they're at without paying but in a gesture of what I assume to be some kind of romance/friendship/what have you, the guy pays and lets the girl think she's getting away with a crime. But why? What is the appeal here? I mean yeah I've done some not so savory things in my life but I've never had any desire to steal something, let alone a meal that I definitely have the money to pay for. I'm sure there's supposed to be some kind of rush that you get from the adrenaline it takes to break free from the place quickly enough so you don't get caught...but you can achieve the same rush in non-law breaking ways too. So, why do it? I guess that's like asking why people do drugs or why people feel like they have to speed to the point of illegality (is that even a word?) or why some people deface buildings... I suppose the answer you get will always be "because of the rush" or something else equally dumb.
