Another Year In
Saturday was State Fair day again! YAY! I was so stoked to have my awesome free tickets to the fair and I was ready to get up bright and early and head out to the Fair Grounds like I usually do, but this year was just destined to be different.
First, I have been to the fair every year since I moved home with Sara and Anna. This year they wanted to go during a week day (they went on Friday all day) but because I had just started a new job there was no way I could take off an entire day of work to play at the Fair. So sadly I pouted about this loss of tradition but made up for it by talking Nathan into coming up and going to the fair with me. I also snagged a Linda, Spencer, and Jared for the adventure. And adventure it was!
We FINALLY got to the fair around 1:30 where my original game plan of waiting in the shorter lines to ride morning rides was tossed into the garbage can and replaced with eating food first, checking out the exhibits and then riding the rides at night when it was all lit up. That was a mistake and will under NO circumstances happen next year. The food part was great, the exhibits were awesome, I got to walk through the petting zoo and pet some awesomely fantastic animals and then as it began to get darker we went back out to the car to get coats so we wouldn't freeze and then we started waiting in lines for the rides. This was the most ridiculous part of the day. We rode the Tilt-a-whirl first, not so bad on the lines there and it was way fun! Linda, Spencer, Nathan and I all piled into one and we went around so fast my head was spinning when we got off the ride! Loved it! The next ride was a roller coaster, the line was significantly longer. After that we went to wait in line for the Ferris Wheel, again this line got longer. While we were waiting in this line Jared found that he'd lost his cell phone on the roller coaster and had to go
back to look for it. He managed to run back there twice, the second time was after the carnie called Linda's phone because she'd been calling Jared's number in the hopes someone would have found it, and he STILL managed to make it back before we got on the ride. We got to see the fireworks while we waited in line and then freeze to death as we soared above the grounds and got to see the tractor pull and all the 131 thousand + people that were there. The last ride we rode took 1.5 HOURS to get through the line! We were waiting in this ridiculously long line and these stupid teens kept trying to jump us in line. SERIOUSLY! We were all so annoyed, some people need not send their children out into public until they've taken the time to explain to them courtesy and manners. I'm just sayin.
My good intentions of getting up early Saturday were squashed when Linda's friend Peter wanted to hang out. After Nathan and I got back from dinner we all went to RedBox and rented Iron Man 2, and I promptly fell asleep during all the good parts because I was just that tired. I finally crawled into my bed at 2am. The thing is, when you invite people that aren't really "morning people" to the fair you end up getting up later and going later...so we got up around 9:30 or so and showered and dressed and then ate breakfast and waited on Linda's brothers to arrive. By the time we left the house it was 11am. I was very distressed. The traffic was awful and it took us 2.5 hours to even get to a parking lot! No kidding. And in the process my car overheated and we had to pull off on the shoulder and sit for a little while so it could cool down, never happened to me before in my life by the way. There was a slight added bonus to the car overheating, I enjoyed watching people that thought they'd get further by driving in the median get pissed and have to wait until someone would let them back into normal traffic flow :-D simple pleasures.

I hope that next year will be just as memorable. I also hope that by next year I'll be in better shape so that my entire body doesn't seize up and my muscles don't cramp from walking around and standing in ridiculously long lines for hours and hours. :-)

Ah, I miss my fair-going single days. Now a fair trip is all about the kiddos and poses almost NO enjoyment for me. :-( I have not ventured the state fair since I was... well I can't remember when, although I went to the LA county fair every year which is probably bigger than or at least as big as the NC state fair... I always get a kick out of that.
