Nice Guys Finish Last
Funny I never thought that phrase applied to anything but nice guys in a dating situation. You know, girls always go for the bad boy and the nice guy is always the best friend. Sad but True. Today I figured out that the phrase actually applies to everyone. If you're a nice person and you do the right thing, people will screw you over.
I hit a car in the parking lot Tuesday morning. I pulled into a spot and realized that there was no way I could open my doors because the truck to my left was way over the line so I went to back up and hit the car to my right. CRAP CRAP CRAP! So I stopped wrote a note with my name and work phone number on it and apologized for hitting the car. When I got out and put the note on her windshield I surveyed the damage...it wasn't that bad the piece of the fender over the tire was bent in and scratched some and I had pushed the mirror back towards the car. Well at least I didn't cause that much damage and it totally could have been worse. So when I got up to my office my co-worker told me to go back with her camera and take pictures...so I did. And it's a good thing too.
She called me Tuesday after I had gone home and left me a message and I returned the call Wednesday morning. She was very polite and said that she'd only had the car for 2 months and she just wants it back to where it was. I told her I understood and that if she could just have an estimate done I'd really like to try and pay it out of my pocket. So this morning she called me and let me know it was going to be $1665...WTF?!?! Seriously?! For that tiny bit of damage? Freaking no way. psh. She faxed the estimate to my dad and he called me back and read it to me... replacing the fender, painting the fender, painting the door, replacing the side mirror and there might be minor labor charges to replace the door handles. DO WHAT?!?!!!! Okay so man I'm really glad I have the pictures. My co-worker is going to get her daughter to email the pictures to her and then I can forward them to my dad. There's no way that this teeny bit of damage should cause all these things to be replaced...no freaking way!
But just to let you know... this is what happens when you have integrity and own up to your mistakes. Because I was taught to do the right thing and did the right thing, it sounds like this woman is trying to screw me over. How uncool is that?!? It's situations like this that make good honest people turn into people that lie.
