Motivate Meee
I'm feeling utterly unmotivated. I've got nothing to say about anything lately and it's depressing me. Urgh!
In an attempt to write a blog I will talk about two things...the Conference in Wilmington and the one I'm planning now.
1. The Wilmington Conference:
Not what we thought it was gonna be. Activities at the beach turned out to be 30 mins at the beach after they spent 3 hours doing a free car wash as a service project that morning and then 30 mins in each class (which felt like 3 hours as well!). The dinner and dancing that was to take place on a boat, well sheesh! I thought it was going to be all evening as a dance usually is...instead it was one and a half hours. Some dance! The boat was small and quite a few people had to stay behind. They under estimated the numbers that would be attending (they guessed 50 and had about 150) and didn't have enough food for everyone and the dancing that took place was about 45 mins worth of watching people attempt to get their groove on as we got rocked on the wake of passing boats.
I'm not saying it was terrible and I'm not putting them down...I do want to make sure that's understood. They worked with what they had and the girl planning it had a great idea in mind but as far as putting it into action, well they just didn't do enough pre-planning.
I'm a stickler for schedules...if you're going to put on a conference do a schedule and hand it out to everyone there so they know what is going on and when. I also really like great speakers, they had an excellent keynote speaker this year (ask me about last year and all I can tell you is I don't remember much of what he even talked about) but the people teaching the classes...whoa. You would think 4 missionaries would have enough teaching experience that they could teach a really great lesson..not so much. The first class I went to the guy held my attention for about 5mins and then it was gone and I kept wondering how much longer I'd have to sit there. The next class was the missionaries and the final class was the only one that I really truly enjoyed. The guy did a great job of teaching his class and the only thing I didn't like was a comment he made about his sister repenting for her singleness... my friends and I have had many discussions about this since.
I understand they planned it all very last minute, they weren't going to do a conference this year, and I understand the girl called to the committee chair position hasn't been doing it for very long but at the same time there are just some things you should already know... get good engaging teachers (sometimes this can't be helped...what one person thinks is good someone else might not agree), create a schedule and stick with it, don't build certain parts of your conference up if they're not going to be what people think they'll be.
2. October...the month for a conference!
Right now I'm working on planning the conference for October. Like last year I'm having some issues with getting the location that I so desperately want and May likely end up very angry and having to revamp the conference with the back up plan. Luckily, I have one. I have a tendency to constantly be trying to one up myself. It's like I'm in this constant battle with ME to do better. Last year the conference was good...I thought it could have been MUCH better though. I got called a mere 2 months before the conference and had to rush to plan. This year I've known a year in advance and had already formed my ideas. As far as putting them in motion though... eh.
To add to the fact that we still haven't secured a location for the conference, my co-chair is going to be at his sister's wedding the weekend of the conference. That really REALLY sucks! Because I rely on him so heavily to help keep me level headed during this stuff and when two things go wrong at once he's there to fix one while I fix the other. So this year I'm going to have to rely on my committee more as a whole and I'm really hoping this works out.
We're planning a service based conference. I just really want to make sure that people that attend have such a great time that they'll want to come back every year after. I know you can't please everyone but if I make just one person thrilled that they were there I'll be happy. Last year we had at least two thrilled people ...so thrilled they got married that December. I'm not holding my breath that everything will go off without a hitch but I am praying constantly that this goes better than last year.
I really REALLY need to get motivated and write a nice witty blog again though... these informative ones are just no fun.
