Well Well, Whadda Ya Know...

I bet most of you don't know the first thing about State Agencies. It's okay, I didn't either until I started working for DOT. Most people just think State Employees are all a bunch of lazy turds that suck your tax dollars up...that is only partially true. Most State Employees are spongy life forms that absorb the life and excitement out of the people around them and suddenly happy shiny people are now depressed and lazy State workers. It's sad really. However, there are people that take their jobs very seriously and get their work done and earn that paycheck.

I also bet that most of you never knew that the Department of Transportation is a statewide agency that spans not only Raleigh and Wake County but every single corner and tiny town of North Carolina. Go figure.

What has brought this post on? I constantly get calls from vendors (aka-people we buy our crap from) that want to speak to our accounts payable department...funny thing...we don't have such a thing. We are not some little company that has one section within it that pays all the bills. Nope Nope! We're a vast and disturbingly large State Department that has many little nooks and crannies and each and every section pays it's own bills. Go figure. It's kind of like each individual family pays their own bills, we don't have one person in the entire state that pays the bills of each family within that State...although I bet loads of us wish we did!

There's also the people that call here (I've no idea why) and want to speak to someone that is in a field division. Okay I understand that you may have been given the wrong number but when I tell you our office is in Raleigh and that person works in Forest City...why the heck are you going to ask me if I can connect you?? That only works if you're in the same building. Or like the lady that called yesterday and wanted to know the phone number for the court house in her town and she couldn't understand why we didn't know what she was talking about because the building was HUGE and you can't miss it. Well lady, first off...we're NOT the Office of the Courts so we wouldn't have the information and secondly it's not like we're sitting in your town staring out at this large building that you can apparently see from miles away... we're in R A L E I G H! SHEESH!

So just a little bit of information for you all out there... DOT is not just the DMV. It's a huge Department full of hundreds maybe even thousands of little divisions throughout the entire state. To demonstrate this size and location matter I am posting the link to the DOT directory:
https://apps.dot.state.nc.us/dot/directory/authenticated/ToC.aspx
You will notice that there are not hundreds or thousands of Divisions listed..possibly a hundred on that page, maybe less. But most of the division links you click on will have even more links in it to other sections within their division. Really, it's quite scary how giganormous (yes I do realize that's not a real word) the Department of Transportation really is. I do believe that of all the State Agencies DOT is probably the largest...followed closely, if not surpassed, by the Department of Corrections.

That is all for my little, where I work informational session. I hope you have enjoyed your tour through the DOT and if you would like more information, please feel free to ask.
