Being Creative

I had decided at some point last year that I wanted to start my own photography business. My friend (and now roomie) Jordan and I had discussed starting this business together and using our photographs to make money. I am by no means a professional and I only have a sad little point and shoot digital camera, seen right. Even though my camera and my skills aren't professional I've taken some pretty great pictures. I found a website where I can store and print my pictures (although I'm not going to shop around for cheaper prices) and I decided what I wanted to sell. I figured 4x6 prints on a 5x7 notecard would be the easiest things to make and sell. They look fantastic and I loved the so so much I decided to see how some of the prints would look in an 8x10 matted format...they look great too!

So Jordan and I combined our skills and created a website...http://joreldesigns.webs.com/...and signed up for a craft fair with my mom and my awesome co-worker Dodi. This weekend is the craft fair and thus our first foray into public sales. I'm so excited and nervous and stressed out and happy all rolled into one big ball! I hope people like our stuff enough to want to buy it and I hope we make enough money for this to be worth it. I've got my fingers crossed, and we've invited all our friends and families to come and check out our stuff so we're hoping that word of mouth will help us sell a few things. If this goes well I'm going to start looking into more craft fairs and other public venues to try and sell our stuff. If all that goes well then I'm hoping to make this a full fledged business and not have to keep working for the State... I'm not holding my breath for that though..right now it's just a happy fun thing to do that may provide a cushy little second income. So if you're around this weekend you should drop by the NC State Farmer's Market in Raleigh and look for our booth :-)

Congrats on the new venture! My favorite photo site is http://digital-photography-school.com/. It has SO much helpful information about digital photography starting with the basics and moving into more advanced stuff. I get overwhelmed with it though because it makes me realize how much I have to learn.
Good luck!
