Oh sweet blog!
How I have neglected you. As my personal drama has increased my interesting posts have decreased. I've had some very personal problems lately and am struggling emotionally with them. There have been some very happy things happening as well that keep me balanced so that I don't backslide into a depression but it's kept my mind so busy I keep forgetting to add new things to my blog. So for your reading pleasure:
I want a fishtank!
My boyfriend (oh that word sounds so awkward for someone who's 31) has a saltwater aquarium. Two of the weekends that I've been down there we've gone to the fish store and he's gotten new things to pretty up the tank, including two new fish, one on each trip. The tank has sand along the bottom and is filled with "live rock" (which is pretty much coral), crabs, snails, two shrimp, and 6 fish. Nathan also has a book about all the fish and their aquarium compatability that we've looked through a few times together, usually after getting a new fish. He started out with four clown fish and on his Birthday we added a sailfin and then two weeks ago we added a Coral Beauty angelfish. It's been so much fun to watch him care for the fish and to watch them adjusting to their new environment.

The sailfin is fun because he changes colors dark to light depending on his mood. His fins, open in the picture above, open and close as he swims around or gets frightened or is feeling particularly bossy. Nathan got him because he's supposed to pick the algae off the rocks and be a pretty docile fish. The Coral Beauty is supposed to be an agressive fish, he should be the last one you add to a tank. As you add the fish to the new environment it takes them a while to get accustomed to their new environment and since the angelfish are supposed to be agressive if you put them in first they will dominate all docile fish you add later. So, the funny thing has been that the sailfin seems to be the bully, he stays at the bottom of the tank and likes to taunt the Coral Beauty which has been the one picking the algae off the rocks and he swimming all over the tank and in and out of the coral. It's so funny to watch the role reveral they have going on.
As Nathan and I have looked through the book together and walked through the fish store, I've found a few fish that I would personally LOVE to have! The store has a beautiful puffer fish that I would love to buy, he's only $35, which sounds like a lot for a fish but when you consider some of the others run $75 or more it's not so bad. There was anothe fish who I can't recall what he was but he looked like he'd been made of multiple colors of playdough swirled together. Both of these fish are agressive fish so if I were to start a tank I wouldn't be able to have more docile fish, like the clown fish Nathan has. I would have to have several large fish that could all hold their own.
Sadly, I can't afford an aquarium. I have three dogs to feed and loads of bills to pay and an aquarium is a LOT of work too. You have to constantly clean the algae off the glass and purify the water and feed the fish about three times a day (although that varies depending on your fish). So, I guess I'll just have to live vicariously though Nathan and his beautiful fish tank. I do love when we get to go by the fish store and pick out a new fish and I can't wait until we get to go select another new one to add. The other fun part has been naming them all. We've sat around and watched them all and seen their personalities... The clownfish all swim around the top...two of them stay together constantly, they are Marco and Polo. There's one that is very adventurous and always on the move...sometimes swimming around the tank in laps, this reminds Nathan of his very athletic and active friend Joe, so that's his name. And then there's Bilbo...the loner that usually swims around in the left corner by himself and sometimes makes a journey around the tank before settling back down in his left corner. The sailfin is Peekatchoo, because he's yellow and black like the pokeman character and because he peeks around corners and from under the rocks at the bottom. The Coral beauty looks very rastafarian with all his bright neon coloring so Nate named him Ziggy after Ziggy Marley. It's really been an exciting hobby that he has and I love learning all the new things about the different types of fish. If you have the time, patients, and income I highly reccommend getting a saltwater aquarium.
