Life Comes at You Fast

I'm quite proud of myself, I managed to be the only one at a party not drinking this weekend. I've come a long way. I used to be one of those people who succumed to the pressure, everyone else has a cup and it's not like I've ever done anything stupid when drunk (well except the actual drinking part).

I made the mistake of starting to drink at 18 as a freshman in college. I quit drinking when I moved home with my parents after dropping out of school but on occasion when out with friends, if they broke out the liquer I was right there with them. This weekend I was at a birthday party for a kinda special guy in my life and he's going through the whole drinking thing now since he didn't when he was younger... some people just have to experience it. He was pretty good about it though, a few beers and some beer pong was all, he didn't get drunk and stupid like the rest. Everyone there was a drinker and lately that's just not my scene, but he really wanted me at his party, so I went. I talked, hung out with people I don't know, played a lil guitar hero, and even learned how to play beer pong...but not once did I decide to cave on my decision not to drink. YAY!

Aside from his social drinking habit, I'm very enamoured by this gentleman and have had the opportunity to spend two weekends with him the last two weeks in a row. Last weekend we drove to the Oak Island Lighthouse and climbed to the second floor (you can only go to the top if you request a visit two weeks in advace...I will be going back soon for that) and learned a little history about the lighthouse from the volunteer guy. We then had lunch and hopped the ferry to Bald Head Island where we walked around and saw the Bald Head Lighthouse and a few interesting spots around the island. I hope to go back there soon and have enough money to rent a cart...golf carts or bicycles are the only mode of transportation on the island...so I can see the entire island. It was a long and beautiful day and I really enjoyed the company.

This weekend was a family lunch for his birthday and then the party thrown by his siblings. I grew up with his family until I was in Junior High and so it was a real pleasure to get to spend time with them as well. Then Sunday we hit downtown together and he took me around some of the more interesting buildings so I could photograph them. We also spent some time working on his fish tank (it's amazing!) and just laying around talking about life. I left this morning and I can't wait until the next time we will be able to spend a little more time together.

I'm finding that life has a funny way of putting people together at the most random of times. I've known him nearly my whole life.. I've gone to college and dated lots of people and had my crazy life experiences and now I'm working on bettering me. He served a mission, got married, had kids, got divorced, did the whole crazy life experiences thing most people start at 21 and is now coming down off of that, going to college, and trying to straighten his life out. It's amazing...we're both working on getting our lives in order and just happened to have a chance to hang out one weekend and get to know each other again. It's just interesting how we've known each other for so long and only now are we getting to know each other better.
