Aaliyah's Birthday

Tonight was my niece's Birthday, she turned 6. We didn't have any kind of get together tonight because tomorrow they're having a little party for her. I promised her back in November that I was going to throw her a Lady Bug Birthday Party. Well, as it's gotten closer to the day for her party there have been a few things here and there to prevent me from actually throwing her a full on party...mostly the fact that I haven't got the funds to throw her a party as well as myself and my brother didn't have much money to buy stuff either. So, instead her Auntie Ariel made her a Lady Bug Birthday Cake.

On my way over to my parents house after work tonight, I stopped in at Michael's Craft Store and picked up a few necessities. I got to my parent's house and started whipping up a box of Devil's Food Cake and then I poured it into a glass bowl and baked it in the oven. I figured cooking it in a bowl would be about the time equivalent of the bundt cake pan so I set the timer for 47 minutes. When the timer went off it was still shaking around like a bowl full of Jello, so my mom suggested another 15 minutes, which ended up being PERFECT! I then let the cake cool for 10 minutes before moving it to a cooling rack and then I cut the very round top part off to make it sit flat and cut part of that up to make a head for my Ladybug. I then stuck the whole thing in the freezer so it would cool faster.

While my cake was cooling I whipped up a recipe for a simple Vanilla Buttercream Frosting.
3 Cups Powdered Sugar
1/3 Cup Butter (room temp!)
1 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
2 Tbsp Milk
I sifted the powdered sugar in with the butter and turned on the blender. Next I added the milk and the vanilla. The frosting was a bit too thick to spread around my cake so I watered it down quite a bit with more milk until it was a nice smooth consistency for spreading around. Then I added a TON of red food coloring paste until it got as close as I could get it to a real red.

Next I placed my cake on a beautiful cake platter and began doing the crumb layer of frosting. This is the prep layer where you just get a thin layer of frosting around the cake and it doesn't really matter if it gets crumbs in it. Then I went over it with a thick coating of the frosting and shaped it around as best I could. I then took my mom's cake spatula thing (I have no idea what it's really called but if you're frosting a cake it's your best friend!) and dipped it in warm water and used that to spread the icing around and get it nice and smooth all around.

The very last thing I did was take the black icing I bought from Michael's and stick a tip on the tube and draw the lines and spots on the lady bug then I changed out for a much smaller tip for eyes and mouth. My mom wants me to go buy some black licorice for antennae...if I can find some I'll grab it tomorrow on my way to the party. Anyway, I'm SO SUPER proud of my cake! I can't believe this turned out so amazingly good! And this was my first time ever making one... so, GO ME! :-D
