Christmas Adventure

Oh boy do I have a funny story for you all! The other night my roommate Cassie M and I decided we were going to get our tree. Well she didn't get home from baby sitting until 8 or so and we took time to decorate the house with a few of the decorations she got from her dad and by the time we got done it was 9. Well, the Garden Center at WalMart closes at 9 so we decided to call and see if we could still get a tree. No answer. Oh well off we went! We drove to the lovely Super WalMart in Wake Forest and walked back to the Garden Center where we got lucky...there was a Manager back there helping a couple find a fake tree, so we waited. When he was finished I looked at him and said "You look like somebody important!" to which he responded "Oh no, I'm not important, I just work here." Nice. We asked if it was possible to still get us a 5' live tree from the Garden Center and he was pretty sure there was no reason we couldn't. And then we went back to the outdoor area where the trees are... oh dear.

Apparently when they close the Garden Center at night the roll down all these big plastic tarp things between all the doorways. I'm not sure why they feel the need to do this between the indoor walls because it's not like someone is going to be able to get out with all the outdoor walls sealed but whatever. This was a problem. The guy searched and searched for a switch but couldn't find one until he walked back over to the wall where the entrance to the store is. Ah HA! Score! A wall full of switches, but which one opened the wall? He started flipping switches...fans, heaters, another fan, finally we heard something making a grinding noise and looked till we found one of the walls was rolling up but just not the right one. So, he went about flipping more switches. As he was doing that we realized we happened to be standing next to a tree laying in a puddle on the floor. Hmmm...we picked it up but the sign said 6' and those were $30 not $20 like the 5' trees but we figured we'd take a shot in the dark. Excuese us sir? But this tree was just laying here, we really wanted to get a $20 tree...is it possible to get this poor wet tree that's been laying here in a puddle for $20? He picked up his handy dandy hand scanner and scanned the sign. "This tree is $30". *sigh* So, he finally paiged someone over his intercom and asked how to get back to the live trees. He went back to the wall and opened two other walls before finding the right one.

By the time this door opened we were cold, it was Saturday night when it snowed by the way, and so when the wall started rolling up we were so stoked we started jumping up and down and shouting Hooray! We went through to the other side and picked out the best looking short tree and he helped us cut it down off the string that was holding it up and then said he'd help us find a cart for it. Psh, we don't need no stinkin cart! So I grabbed one end and Cassie grabbed on to the other end and we toted that tree all the way from the back of the store to the front of the store with people giving us funny looks the whole way. I'm sure all the giggling coming from us was a good reason for a lot of the staring and it didn't help that Cassie said we'd probably end up on that peopleofwalmart.com website. HAHA!

We payed for our tree and then went out to the parking lot to try and tie it onto my car. Oh boy that was so much fun. Freezing cold and working in the snow we finally got the tree tied to the top of my car and drove off to the house. We got all the decorations out and put red and white lights on the tree and I tested all the lights out before we strung them up. But when I plugged them in they started blinking...so I changed unplugged them and changed a bulb but when I plugged it back in half the strand was OUT! Argh! So I took all the lights back off the tree and sat down in the floor and went down the row one by one testing the bulbs but to no avail. Sadly we ended up with just one strand of white lights and two red but it worked out. The tree looks a bit like a candy cane :-) and then we had fun trying to find limbs to hold all the heavy ornaments all the while listening to christmas music on Pandora. It was great fun! I really enjoyed tree decorating with Cassie and I hope next year she'll be around again and we can add more to the fun!
